Unit 01 - Drive Safely
This STEAM-based unit aims to combine a multitude of disciplines while introducing “Safe Driving” as the central phenomenon under study from various angles. Concepts from the fields of Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts and Math are intertwined throughout the 5 phases that make up this unit. The unit is designed in compliance with international standards as outlined in the next section, and it intends to achieve a concrete set of learning goals as described below.
The philosophy upon which this unit’s design rests is one that fosters students as leaders in charge of their own learning. Through the design of engaging learning experiences, this unit allows students to interact and construct meanings, to practice and develop skills, and to evaluate learning outcomes. This is achieved through a mixture of in-class and out-of-class activities supported by a platform of digital educational content. With this perspective, the role of the teacher is ultimately important to make the unit succeed in achieving its targets. The teacher’s presence is essential to coach and support the learning process, both individually and collectively. As such, this guide is here as a tool in the hands of the teacher to help in preparation, delivery and evaluation of learning. It takes the teacher step-by-step through the phases that make up the unit while detailing what the teacher should do to maximize the output from the material incorporated herein.
